Aw... telnet access going away?!?!

Elmar K. Bins - 2025-05-12 16:25:49
It could be made sustainable by using one-time passwords, but the bots will catch up quickly.

Elmar K. Bins - 2025-05-12 16:27:49
But I concur, taking telnet access away is a bad move

Aaron Weintraub - 2025-05-12 16:31:20
Well I think the bots are mostly run by "responsible" operators that are just opportunistic and making their own API because there isn't a provided one. I don't tihnk we would see reverse engineering of a CAPTCHA-type math problem (what's 83+92) on the initial telnet connection

Elmar K. Bins - 2025-05-12 16:38:03
One should probably also ask Hurricane; their routeserver's been telnet-available for ages (with a password that's never changed)...

Elmar K. Bins - 2025-05-12 16:38:10
(as - ask for their experience)

Greg Choules - 2025-05-12 16:42:39
I'm glad they can spell.

Max Tulyev - 2025-05-12 16:55:27
I remember Spain several weeks ago... )

Shane Kerr - 2025-05-12 16:58:25
Is Valerie preparing for a coup?!?! 😉

Marco d'Itri - 2025-05-12 16:59:27
Maybe those who still know UUCP can help? :-)

Gert Doering - 2025-05-12 16:59:33
*wake up*

Gert Doering - 2025-05-12 16:59:55
(but germany lost all useful phone lines, so it's all voip on dsl now)

Marco d'Itri - 2025-05-12 16:59:57
(I see that my message was duplicated. Latest Firefox on Linux.)

Marco d'Itri - 2025-05-12 17:00:26
(I think that I have seen a "your connection has been recovered" message just before. @meetecho)

Gert Doering - 2025-05-12 17:00:39
Marco: saw your message only once

Elmar K. Bins - 2025-05-12 17:05:14
Me too, so don't worry. Yeah, Gert, time for an alternative network. I'm out unfortunately, next landmass is Western Africa, still too far away :-(

Michael Richardson - 2025-05-12 17:06:30
re: UUCP, see : https://www.complete.org/nncp-concepts/

Gert Doering - 2025-05-12 17:07:03
*save away, read later*

Shane Kerr - 2025-05-12 17:07:08
Surely nobody thinks BGP is uncool?!?!

Michael Richardson - 2025-05-12 17:07:23
I notice that there is no A or I in BGP.

Doris Hauser - 2025-05-12 17:07:41
😂

Elmar K. Bins - 2025-05-12 17:07:42
Nah, still the coolest thing since invention of ice cream

Gert Doering - 2025-05-12 17:07:51
BGP isn't exactly a cool thing to play with... it's there, it needs to work, and if you *do* some exciting things with it, love letters come in...

Elmar K. Bins - 2025-05-12 17:07:53
Michael: Yeah, that's a concern

Shane Kerr - 2025-05-12 17:08:24
"Assume a spherical router in a vacuum..."

Elmar K. Bins - 2025-05-12 17:09:16
🤣

Gert Doering - 2025-05-12 17:11:31
real-world into academic curriculum! heresy!

Marcus Gerdon - 2025-05-12 17:13:55
Suprise; prior knowledge of how things are actually run might be needed... shocker.

Shane Kerr - 2025-05-12 17:18:35
Is MANRS over 9000 now?

Marcus Gerdon - 2025-05-12 17:26:28
Community. Making their way into "ruling" on network operation; with first tenders mandating MANRS membership.
